The History and Transformation of
MS Vulkana

MS Vulkana Adventure

A Storied Past: From Fishing Vessel to Whaling Boat

Launched in 1957 at Lista and originally named Viga, Vulkana began her life as a hardworking fishing boat, sailing the North Sea and Norwegian coast. She hauled in herring, sprat, mackerel, and cod, earning her place in the fleet operated by the renowned "Herring Kings" of Ryfylke. By 1972, she was sold, renamed Leif Jr., and repurposed as a whaling boat, traveling from Lofoten to the ice edges near Svalbard during the summers.

Over the decades, the vessel changed hands several times, gaining new names along the way—Heimøybas and Ofsen. One owner lovingly referred to her as "the best boat I ever had." However, by 2006, the once-proud vessel was left abandoned in Botnhamn, Vesterålen, facing the grim fate of being scrapped.

A New Beginning: The Visionaries Behind Vulkana's Revival

In 2007, during the Tromsø Film Festival, two bath enthusiasts happened upon a boat broker from Andenes. A casual conversation sparked an idea: why not turn a fishing boat into a floating spa? What began as a modest dream of purchasing a small fishing vessel evolved into the spontaneous purchase of Ofsen at 3:35 a.m. outside the Verdensteateret in Tromsø. Although the boat was in a deplorable state—run-down, abandoned, and filled with broken equipment—there was a vision.

With the expertise of Finnish architect Sami Rintala and skilled boat builder Gunnar Eldjarn, a transformation began. Over the next two years, Ofsen was reborn as MS Vulkana, a unique combination of history and modern wellness. Where 60 tons of cod were once stored, you now find a serene Japanese-inspired Zen Lounge and a revitalizing Turkish hammam. The crew’s quarters have been replaced with a wood-fired sauna and an intimate restaurant seating up to 12 guests.

From Whaling Vessel to Arctic Spa Retreat

Today, MS Vulkana is a floating spa, offering visitors the chance to relax in a wood-fired hot tub on the viewing deck or revitalize in the hammam, all while surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Northern Norway. Whether docked or sailing through the fjords, Vulkana promises an authentic and unforgettable Scandinavian experience.

Specializing in tailor-made adventures for groups of up to 12, Vulkana offers everything from ski trips in the Lyngen Alps to creative artist retreats. Celebrate life’s milestones aboard this Arctic oasis, where tradition meets tranquility.

In 2023, MS Vulkana Adventure was honored with the prestigious "Traveller’s Choice" award, placing it among the top 10% of attractions worldwide on TripAdvisor, a testament to the unique and authentic experiences it offers to visitors.

A Living Piece of History

As Vulkana continues to sail along the coast, she carries with her the stories of her past. People who worked on the boat decades ago come aboard to share memories of fishing, whaling, and life at sea. She is not just a vessel but a floating piece of cultural heritage, and we are proud to have preserved her legacy, honoring her past while creating new experiences for future generations.
